Ephesians 2 – Therefore

Eph 2:11 Therefore, remember that at one time you were Gentiles (heathens) in the flesh, called Uncircumcision by those who called themselves Circumcision, [itself a mere mark] in the flesh made by human hands.

Therefore … I think if the Bible were written in today’s language some of those ‘therefores’ would read, “How do you like me now?” Such is the case with this one. It’s like when you are in the heat of a debate and the other person makes such a good point that you can’t do anything but sit in silence. Not really wanting to admit they’ve got you, but not having anything to say. Therefore …

I think we as Christians need to get this therefore. Basically, we are being told we aren’t really all that, we’re not as good as we think we are. Worse yet, we’re in many ways being what we used to despise. Therefore …

When we try to place our standard of measurement on those who are not Christians, not Believers, we tend to forget just how we got where we are. We wouldn’t be where we are if it weren’t for God. We didn’t clean up our act on our own. “For we are God’s handiwork …” (Eph 2:10)  Phft, we didn’t make ourselves into what we are – God did. Therefore …

We wouldn’t be who we are if it weren’t for Christ, “… recreated in Christ Jesus.” RECREATED, did you see that? We were so bad we didn’t just get a makeover, we got a do over! Jesus looked at our sorry selves and said, I got nothing to work with here, I’m going to start from scratch. So those people we are calling uncircumcised, the ones that don’t  live up to our standards? They don’t have Jesus so how can we possibly think they could be any different? Therefore …

Then there are those of us Christians that think we look good. We do all the right things. We follow all the rules. We got it all together. But deep down, we know it’s just an act. Those who live with us at home know the real us. They know that the person we present on Sunday morning isn’t anything like the person they live with. Know what we are? We are just like the Jews. Yep. Just because the Jews had a circumcision, they thought they were better than the Gentiles. But it meant nothing. It was all done by human hands. Therefore …

We need to remember that it isn’t through any of our works that we have the blessing of a relationship with God. It’s not because we do all the right things. See, unless our heart is circumcised, unless Jesus has recreated us, and unless we are using are skills and talents for the good works that God wants, well, we are just being pointless. Those people around us who can’t follow the rules, they don’t need rules, they need relationship. They need Jesus, and THEN they can follow the rules. Therefore …

So, what are we going to do to get them that relationship? How are we going to live our lives so that they want that relationship? How will we live our lives so that we stand out, so that we are different, so that they see Jesus in us?

Therefore …
