1MY SON, if you will receive my words and treasure up my commandments within you,2Making your ear attentive to skillful and godly [a]Wisdom and inclining and directing your heart and mind to understanding [applying all your powers to the quest for it];
3Yes, if you cry out for insight and raise your voice for understanding,
4If you seek [Wisdom] as for silver and search for skillful and godly Wisdom as for hidden treasures,
5Then you will understand the reverent and worshipful fear of the Lord and find the knowledge of [our omniscient] God.(A)
6For the Lord gives skillful and godly Wisdom; from His mouth come knowledge and understanding.
7He hides away sound and godly Wisdom and stores it for the righteous (those who are upright and in right standing with Him); He is a shield to those who walk uprightly and in integrity,
8That He may guard the paths of justice; yes, He preserves the way of His saints.(B)
9Then you will understand righteousness, justice, and fair dealing [in every area and relation]; yes, you will understand every good path.
10For skillful and godly Wisdom shall enter into your heart, and knowledge shall be pleasant to you.
11Discretion shall watch over you, understanding shall keep you,
12To deliver you from the way of evil and the evil men, from men who speak perverse things and are liars,
13Men who forsake the paths of uprightness to walk in the ways of darkness,
14Who rejoice to do evil and delight in the perverseness of evil,
15Who are crooked in their ways, wayward and devious in their paths.
16[Discretion shall watch over you, understanding shall keep you] to deliver you from the alien woman, from the outsider with her flattering words,(C)
17Who forsakes the husband and guide of her youth and forgets the covenant of her God.
18For her house sinks down to death and her paths to the spirits [of the dead].
19None who go to her return again, neither do they attain or regain the paths of life.
20So may you walk in the way of good men, and keep to the paths of the [consistently] righteous (the upright, in right standing with God).
21For the upright shall dwell in the land, and the men of integrity, blameless and complete [in God’s sight], shall remain in it;
22But the wicked shall be cut off from the earth, and the treacherous shall be rooted out of it.

Wisdom – the word wisdom and wise appear several times throughout Chapter 1. But basically, both mean what we think it means – the trait of utilizing knowledge and experience with common sense and insight; being prudent and sensible.
- H2450 – khaw-kawm’ (v 2, 6, & 10) [root H2449] wise, (that is, intelligent, skilful or artful): – cunning (man), subtil, ([un-]), wise ([hearted], man).
H2449 – khaw-kam’ (root of 2450 & 2451) A primitive root, to be wise (in mind, word or act): – X exceeding, teach wisdom, be (make self, shew self) wise, deal (never so) wisely, make wiser.
Integrity H8537 – tom (v 7 ) completeness, fullness, innocence, simplicity. The AMP translates this word as integrity which is good word given today’s meaning which is: moral soundness; adherence to moral and ethical principles; soundness of moral character; honesty.
Judgement/Justice – Todays meaning of judgement is just a little off from the meaning in OT. Today the definition of judgement is: an opinion formed by judging something; the cognitive process of reaching a decision or drawing conclusions. However, in the OT the word is closer to today’s word ‘convict.’ Takes on a little harsher meaning when you read it with the word convict.
- H4941 mish-pawt’ (v 8 & 9) means [root H8199]; properly a verdict (favorable or unfavorable) pronounced judicially, especially a sentence or formal decree (human or (particularly) divine law, individual or collectively), including the act, the place, the suit, the crime, and the penalty; abstractly justice, including a particular right, or privilege (statutory or customary).
- H8199 shaw-fat’ (root) A primitive root; to judge, that is, pronounce sentence (for or against); by implication to vindicate or punish …
Justice/Righteousness – H6664 – tseh’-dek (v 9) [root H6663] rightness, righteousness (what is right or just or normal, rightness, justness (of weights and measures)
Discretion – Again there is some difference in the meaning of today: freedom to act or judge on one’s own; knowing how to avoid embarrassment or distress and the OT meaning:
- H4209 – mez-im-maw’ (v 11) (root H2161); a plan …
Froward/Perverse H8419 – tahpukah (v 12 & 14) [root H2015]; a perversity or fraud. Websters defines froward as: Perverse, that is, turning from, with aversion or reluctance; not willing to yield or comply with what is required; unyielding; ungovernable; refractory; disobedient; peevish; as a froward child. (John Gills: … things contrary to the light of nature, to divine revelation, to the word of God, both law and Gospel …)
Strange woman H2114 – nokriy (v 16) A primitive root; to turn aside (especially for lodging); hence to be a foreigner, strange, profane; specifically (active participle) to commit adultery. (John Gill: not because of another nation, or unknown, but because she belongs to another person, and not to him whom she entices into her embraces.)
You can tell right away that there are things that have to be done in order to receive something here. How? Because there is an ‘IF’ right in first verse, third word in. That tells you that none of the promises can be yours unless you do what the ‘IF’ says. If you look back at the scripture I posted in the beginning, you will see colored words. Basically, all the purple words are things I have to do in order to receive all the blue words. And if I do all the red words, then I will receive the green words.
So IF I:
____will receive my words (Who is my? There is some debate about this. But my thoughts on this are that since the Bible was not originally broken into Chapters and this seems to be a continuation from what we call Chapter 1, then the ‘my’ here would still refer back to the same person as in Chapter 1. The ‘I’ in Chapter 1 was Wisdom. So I think I will just go with that for now. With the thoughts that all wisdom comes from God.)
____treasure up my commandments
____Making your ear attentive, seek and search out to skillful and godly (wise people)
____inclining and directing your heart and mind to understanding, raise your voice for understanding
____cry out for insight
____ be righteous, walk uprightly and in integrity; keep to the paths of the [consistently] righteous; men of integrity, blameless and complete
____justice (make proper verdicts and judgments)
____ be a saint (kind, that is, (religiously) pious (a saint): – godly (man), good, holy (one), merciful); walk in the way of good men
THEN – don’t miss that word ‘then’ it means there was an IF. IF I do all that, THEN I can expect to understand the reverent and worshipful fear of the Lord (remember what this means from Proverbs 1!?), find the knowledge of [our omniscient] God, have sound and godly Wisdom, God will be my shield, guard my paths, and preserve my way. I will be able to understand righteousness, justice, and fair dealings, and understand every good path. Skillful and godly Wisdom will be in my heart and knowledge will be be agreeable, a delight, be pleasant, and be sweet to me. Discretion will watch over me, and understanding will keep me. I will be delivered from all evil and evil men, dwell in the land and remain in it. Woot! Yes, I want that.
I also have to make sure that I do not:
____speak perverse things and lie (tell an untruth; pretend with intent to deceive, make a statement that deviates from or perverts the truth – especially the truth of God’s word)
____forsake the paths of uprightness
____walk in the ways of darkness
____rejoice to do evil
____delight in the perverseness (fraud, not willing to yield or comply with what is required, disobedient, things contrary to the light of nature, to divine revelation, to the word of God)
____be crooked in my ways (deceit, guile, hypocrisy, Winding in moral conduct), wayward and devious in their paths
____forsakes and forgets the covenant with God
____be wicked (morally wrong, a mental disregard for justice, righteousness, truth, honor, virtue)
____be treacherous (deal deceitfully (treacherously, unfaithfully), offend, transgress (-or), (depart), by betraying a trust)
If I do these things, then instead of the good promises, I will sink down to death, my paths will be to the spirits [of the dead], I will not return again, neither attain or regain the paths of life. I will be cut off from the earth and rooted out of it.
Umm, yeah, don’t want that. Do you?
With all that said, did you catch something back in verse 6? Look at it again. “For the Lord gives skillful and godly Wisdom; from His mouth come knowledge and understanding.” The Lord GIVES. All we really have to do is ask for it and then when he gives it to us – USE IT! We make it so hard sometimes. If we are using what the Lord freely gives us, then we will be able to accomplish all those things listed above. It may seem hard, but really, God does all the hard work, all we have to do is walk where He tells us to walk and do what He tells us to do.
Lord I thank You for Your giving nature. Father, You give us all we need to succeed. You have all the equipment ready for us, all we have to do is put it on and use it. I thank You so much for being my provider, my sanctifier, my shield, my protector, my way and my Wisdom. I thank you for the understanding of reverent and worshipful fear of You. I thank You that because of Your Son, Jesus Christ and his blood, death, and resurrection I am able to be delivered from evil, evil men, dwell in the land and remain in it. Father, there is nothing I can do on my own. I can not do all the IFs You have placed on my shoulders – I give them all to You. I know that in Your power with the Holy Spirit guiding me that I will be able to walk in Your ways and in Your wisdom.
Father, I pray for those who are blinded. I pray for those who are living in lies, deceit, half truths and untruths. I pray for those who are walking in darkness. Father, some don’t even realize that they are walking in that darkness because it has been a way of life for so long. They do not have Your wisdom, understanding, and knowledge to know the way in which they should go. They are unable to understand righteousness, true righteousness, justice, and what is fair. Lord, they need Your wisdom, open their eyes as you did Saul’s eyes. I pray that their crooked ways and immoral conduct will bring them face to face with You on this side, and that they will see that you hold everything out to them to freely receive. I ask that those who will not receive Your free gift, the wicked and the treacherous be removed from the path of those who will. Turn the Saul’s into Paul’s so that Your name will be glorified through the transformation. To You be all the glory, and honor forever. Amen!* Keywords taken from KJV translation.
