Psalm 91

1HE WHO [a]dwells in the secret place of the Most High shall remain stable and fixed under the shadow of the Almighty [Whose power no foe can withstand].2I will say of the Lord, He is my Refuge and my Fortress, my God; on Him I lean and rely, and in Him I [confidently] trust!

3For [then] He will deliver you from the snare of the fowler and from the deadly pestilence.

4[Then] He will cover you with His pinions, and under His wings shall you trust and find refuge; His truth and His faithfulness are a shield and a buckler.

5You shall not be afraid of the terror of the night, nor of the arrow (the evil plots and slanders of the wicked) that flies by day,

6Nor of the pestilence that stalks in darkness, nor of the destruction and sudden death that surprise and lay waste at noonday.

7A thousand may fall at your side, and ten thousand at your right hand, but it shall not come near you.

8Only a spectator shall you be [yourself inaccessible in the secret place of the Most High] as you witness the reward of the wicked.

9Because you have made the Lord your refuge, and the Most High your dwelling place,(A)

10There shall no evil befall you, nor any plague or calamity come near your tent.

11For He will give His angels [especial] charge over you to accompany and defend and preserve you in all your ways [of obedience and service].

12They shall bear you up on their hands, lest you dash your foot against a stone.(B)

13You shall tread upon the lion and adder; the young lion and the serpent shall you trample underfoot.(C)

14Because he has set his love upon Me, therefore will I deliver him; I will set him on high, because he knows and understands My name [has a personal knowledge of My mercy, love, and kindness–trusts and relies on Me, knowing I will never forsake him, no, never].

15He shall call upon Me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble, I will deliver him and honor him.

16With long life will I satisfy him and show him My salvation.

My Reflections

This is one of those “famous” scriptures. One of those that even non-Christians know part of. Have you ever noticed how the parts that are comforting and require little of us are the parts that are well known? You know, the ‘God’ parts – the part that is HIS responsibility. Whenever we have a promise from God, we really ought to find out if there is anything required of us. Sometimes there isn’t, sometimes there is. Many times there is an IF … THEN statement involved. Does Psalm 91 have one of those?

One requirement is that we have to “dwell in the shelter of the Most High.” See it in v1? And again in v 9? We can’t be out on the field running around doing our thing. We have to be dwelling – making our home – settle down to abide – let ourselves down – in God. Not in ourselves, not in our parents, not in our spouse, not in our friends, not in the word – but in God. If we aren’t living in God – then nothing in this Psalm is a promise to us. We get none of it. Are you abiding, living in, settling down in, God?

Another requirement is that we “say.” See it in v 2? And again in v14 (acknowledge)? And v 15 (call)?  The word in verse 2 means, “to say, to answer, to say in one’s heart, to think, to command, to promise, to intend”. The word in verse 14 means, “to know”. The word in verse 15 means, “to call, call out, recite, read, cry out, proclaim”. Based on the real meanings of these words, it isn’t just about speaking something. How many times do we say, “The Lord will provide.” “I trust in the Lord.” And yet we go home and begin to worry about this or that thing that we just “said” we would trust the Lord for? It’s much easier to “say” than to know in our hearts, and know in our minds. When you ‘know’ something, you know it. We know that we won’t fly out into space because of gravity, so we don’t walk around grabbing onto things to hold us onto earth, just in case gravity gives out. Just because we know and trust doesn’t mean that we just sit around and pray all day either. We know that gravity will hold us down to the earth, but we also know that we have to move to get from one place to the next. When we trust in God, we take step after step after step in faith. Knowing that he has our back and will guide us. What we don’t do is worry that the next step will send us flying off into space. What we don’t do is stand frozen in one spot because we are afraid if we take a step we will trip and fall and float away.

The promises of God are set in stone, they are a done deal – but in order to receive some of them, there are requirements on us as well. It’s like God has the deal on the table, and he’s holding his hand out to shake on it. If you never put your hand up, then you don’t get the deal on the table.

*reaches out to shake God’s hand*

Prayer

Lord, thank you for being all that you are. I feel safe and secure in knowing that I have a deal with the owner, author, creator, and savior of all things. You are my refuge, you are my fortress, you are the One in whom I trust. You are my dwelling place. Lord, I acknowledge that you are God, the great I AM. That Your Son, Jesus Christ died for my sins and rose again. You are the Savior! The Holy Spirit dwells inside of me. You are the Counselor! I call upon You and I trust in you.

Lord I pray for those who are not dwelling and saying. I pray for those who are not putting their hands out to shake on the deal you have laid before them. I pray for those who do not understand that there are requirements on their part to get in on your deal. I ask that You reveal these truths to them through the Holy Spirit. That you call out their name so loudly that they can not help but here. Bring them into your dwelling place. In Jesus Name, Amen.
